in progress : one-d

Playing around with atmospheres today. Trying
to find the character of the setting. I say character
because I see the environment of a painting to have
the biggest influence on a piece's mood. To me, the
spaces created act sort of like a soundtrack to a film.

As this is just the 3rd or 4th layer, and the first
to actually start and define the context of the work,
I am considering, primarily, the loose compositional
elements of this corner. The way they interact with
each other as well as their reaction to light. Taking
note of the motion and direction these decisions can
suggest to the overall piece.

While these things may take on forms that become
something resonant (is that the right word? concrete
maybe?), for now it is focusing on the vertebrae of these
forms and their affect on the other forms around them
that matters.

in progress : one-c

Here's the painting a bit further, working in oil
paints now. Not sure what is happening with the
hair...

sculpture

Here's a photo of a sculpture I made waay back in
2006. It feels more in place outside in the garden,
than when it was inside the house.

in progress : one-b

Here's a few more shots.  I am working in acrylic at this stage, which
I sometimes do, and sometimes don't, depending. Depending on what?
I don't know, just whatever feels good at the time. Sometimes working
in acrylic feels like I am hitting the reset button on oils, sort of like
cleaning out whatever remains from the canvas before. Other times,
I would want to stay with what happened before, that feeling. And I'll
just start with oils. Or I just wouldn't want to deal with the lack of
friction that acrylic has.

At this stage, I will probably hit it with some glazes to buy myself
some time on/with the canvas where it is at now, while also preparing
the piece to move to oils maybe. Not sure.

Here's a few pictures of a painting I started working
on this week. It is at that playing around, waiting to
see what happens stage. I'll post more as it moves
along.
